Rose of Sharon: An All-time Favorite Rose




Although there are a lot of rose bushes to choose from out there, there is no disputing that the Rose of Sharon is still the favourite of many. This flower is known to flourish well in USDA zones 5 to 9. Actually, the Rose of Sharon is more of a hibiscus than a rose. But still, it is a great beginner shrub for people who are just taking up rose gardening. They are fairly easy to cultivate and aren’t much susceptible to pests.

The Rose of Sharon adds much volume to your garden because it is known to grow to a height of 8-10 inches tall and spreads to as much as six feet. This rose is also known for its varied colors that will definitely liven up your garden. Some of its colors include light blue, lavender, white and red. It’s soil and sunlight requirements are also relatively easy to meet. The Rose of Sharon grows in well drained soil and favors direct sunlight, much like actual rose bushes. Remember though that a rose of Sharon that is deprived of sunlight may acquire fungi so be careful.

They are also a favourite when it comes to landscaping because of its bloom season. During the late summer when most roses are done, the rose of Sharon is at its peak. It is also a great backdrop for other short plants. Some also use them for hedges because the rose of Sharon can also be shaped and pruned depending on your preference. You could opt to make it grow from a single stem although its natural pattern is to bloom from multiple stems.

The Rose of Sharon is perfect for areas with extreme summers and drought is prevalent just like the areas in Southern US. It is still able to thrive under these heat conditions and once it get used to it, droughts pose no problem.

It is absolutely perfect for summer gardens in the south. Don’t be fooled if it doesn’t bloom flowers until the mid of July because that’s just normal. Come August, its brilliant green leaves and flowers will start appearing. It will continue to do so until fall.

Hummingbirds and other insects also seem to have taken a liking to the rose of Sharon. You should start getting used to the presence of ladybugs in your garden once the rose of Sharon starts blooming. It is also a great garden plant because it will keep your garden alive when the summer heat starts withering most of your garden flora. So if you are looking for the perfect late summer rose, then the Rose of Sharon is definitely the way to go!
