Container Herb Gardening Simply Makes Sense

In other words, there is simply no good reason not to grow your own, and lots of great reasons to grow your own herbs.  Here are just a few:

1. You’ll save money.  Have you checked out the cost of packaged fresh herbs these days? They’re expensive! (Here in Phoenix a 1 oz. package of fresh organic dill is $2.98).  And let’s face it, most of us don’t use it all at once, so what happens?  We throw in back in the refrigerator or pantry and it goes bad.  Wouldn’t it be nice to snip off exactly the amount you need each time and not worry about wasting herbs or money? Oh, and by the way, herb seeds and plants are extremely inexpensive and the vast majority are perennials, so they’re the gifts that keep on giving - year after year!

2. You’ll enjoy fresher herbs, more conveniently. This one is obvious. Anybody who uses fresh herbs for cooking is already sold on how much better their food tastes. Period. No argument here. However – and I speak from personal experience on this one – I can’t tell you how many times in the past I’ve reached for a specific herb only to discover I was all out. As a result, I either schlepped to the store or did without. Now, all I do is grab a pair of scissors and head out to my deck or patio. Done. I love it!

3. Herbs are friendly, prolific, tolerant, and not the least bit persnickety. You don’t have to fuss and fret over herbs!  They’re givers, not takers!  Yes, of course, they like to be loved (don’t we all?) but they won’t hold it against you if you’re not the neighborhood green thumb!

4. They’re multi-purpose and wonderful gifts.  No kidding. As you’ll learn, herbs make glorious gifts all by themselves (and you’ll be amazed at how appreciative your “giftees” will be) but you can also create many very simple, but elegant, home-made gifts – soaps, seed packs, herb baskets, breads, scrubs, vinegars, and more. Even better, you can throw one together at the last minute and save loads of dough to boot!

5. You can kill two – or four - birds with one stone. Put your herbs to work on more than one job!  Use them alone or with other flowers, plants, fruits, or vegetables to spruce up your surrounding (and add wonderful fragrances), make your food taste better, and help you ward off disease all at once!  What’s not to like about that?

6. You’ll feel less stressed.  Did you know that a recent Rutgers University study found that the simple act of gardening actually reduces stress and anxiety? Therefore, you’ll also benefit from the “journey” – not just the results.
